Welcome everyone to Daily Play Action’s Hockey content for the 2021 NHL season! My name is Sam Duchesneau and I go by @GronkDFS on Twitter, it is a pleasure to be here with you all! While we had no article last night, our DPA premium subscribers were able to take advantage of my cheat sheet and my help last night! My favorite GPP stack was OTT1 and they did not disappoint as they made me and the subs a solid ROI! We’ve got an 8 game slate today and it’s a good one! As usual, I’ll share my top 2 plays for each position (1 stud and 1 value) and we will end the article with a brief summary!

CAR1 Cash Stack: Niederreiter – Aho- Teravainen
Fanduel: $17,700 (32% of salary) / DraftKings: $18,400 (37% of salary)
Carolina faced Detroit on Thursday, and while the results weren’t quite there for Carolina and CAR1, I am going right back to them as this line was dominant yet couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities. CAR1 is a solid line with 29 SCF, 10 HDCF, and a solid 2.46xGF. They will be matching up against the Dylan Larkin line that allows a below-average 24SCA, 9HDCA, and a 2.36xGA. If there’s one rule I’ve learned since last season is to stack against the Red Wings and it doesn’t get any better of a spot than tonight for CAR. On Thursday, Carolina won 3-0 and dominated the Red Wings 42 shots to 14. If it wasn’t for goalie Thomas Greiss, this game would’ve been a blowout and that’s the result that I expect tonight! Expect Aho to lead the way for CAR1 as well as Teravainen. Nino Niederreiter makes this stack cheaper and still provides a solid upside to this line! Good luck to Detroit – it could be a long night for them!
Other viable stacks: TOR1 (Thornton, Matthews, and Marner); EDM1 (RNH, McDavid, and Kassian); VGK1 (Pacioretty, Stephenson, and Stone)
NYI1 GPP Stack: Lee – Barzal – Eberle
Fanduel: $19,200 (35% of salary) / DraftKings: $18,400 (37% of salary)
NYI1 was another stack mentioned in the article that I loved on Thursday. Once again, I’m going right back to them as they have simply one of the best matchups on the slate that will likely end up going overlooked! NYI! as a full line (huge sample size of 537 minutes) have a 35SCF, 16HDCF, and an excellent 3.11xGF. Not only is this line excellent together, but they are also all on the same PP (PP1) which gives them full top line / PP correlation and enormous upside! Also, the Rangers may be a good offensive team but defensively they are a shit show. They rank 29th at 5v5 and 30th in xGA. NYI1 will be matching against the Zibanejad line. They own a 24SCA, 11HDCA, and a 2.07xGA. Those numbers are decent but I don’t think they can stop the Barzal line, and the Rangers PK can’t stop them either. Expect a similar performance to Thursday for NYI1 as they were able to score 3 out of 4 goals against the Rangers on Thursday while combining for a solid 70.6 FD points!
Other viable stacks: MTL2 (Anderson, Suzuki, and Drouin); OTT1 (Tkachuk, Norris, and Batherson); MIN1 (Parise, Rask, and Kaprizov)
Top 2 Players per Position (Stud and Value Play)
Sebastian Aho | $7600 (FD) | $7300 (DK)
I’m going right back to Sebastian Aho in all formats today even though he managed to get only 1 assist on Thursday. When you’re facing a league-worst 3.73 goals per game and a league-worst PK at 74.3% last season, the opposing top line will often yield top plays. The Red Wings have not improved defensively, and with Bernier between the pipes, we could see a goal fest as he is far worse in net than Thomas Greiss. With the solid floor of 3.03 shots, 38 goals in 68 games, and playing on a great offense, I’m all about Aho today! I’ll have plenty of the ‘Canes young centerman and I’m expecting fireworks against the Wings.
Josh Norris | $3700 (FD) | $2500 (DK)
Whenever I see a cheap guy that plays on the 1st or 2nd line I’m interested. Whenever I see a cheap guy that plays on PP1 and that is fully correlated with his linemates, now THAT gets me excited! Josh Norris is a solid prospect for the Ottawa Senators. He played 3 games last season and despite not getting a single point, he looked great. In his 1st game, he and his linemates went off as he notched 2 assists and 2 blocked shots against the Maple Leafs. Tonight, he gets to face the same Leafs team, and I expect him and OTT1 to pay off their salary easily! Toronto was not good defensively and on the PK last season, and the early season results have been similar as they have allowed 10 goals in 2 games so far.
Honorable Mentions: McDavid, Matthews, Barzal, Suzuki, Rask, Stephenson, and Grigorenko
Max Pacioretty | $7700 (FD) | $7300 (DK)
With the new NHL divisions, we will see a lot of certain teams being targeted often. Vegas against the Ducks is one of those matchups that I will be targeting all season long. Pacioretty is always a solid player to target as he hits the shot bonus threshold almost daily and often pays his salary nicely. With tonight’s matchup against the Ducks, I expect another solid night as he should hit shot bonus and potentially get a goal or two! He is one of the best players in the NHL when it comes to generating chances and against the Ducks, it should be money!
Kirill Kaprizov | $4400 (FD) | $4200 (DK)
I was waiting impatiently for this Kid’s NHL debut and wow I was impressed! He looks outstanding already and the man is probably going to end up a Calder trophy candidate. He gets the same matchup as what he had on Thursday, where he logged 21 mins of Ice time (Including OT) and scored 1 goal and added 2 apples with 2 shots! He plays on MIN1 and PP1 and his price is more than reasonable. While he plays on an average offensive team, I expect him to pay off his price once again against the defensively deficient LA Kings.
Honorable Mentions: Stone, Marner, RNH, Nylander, Boeser (DK), Drouin, Dadonov (DK), Anderson, Thornton, Batherson, and Hoglander
Dougie Hamilton | $5800 (FD) | $6200 (DK)
Once again, I’ll play Dougie at this price any day of the week as he is an amazing defenseman in a great spot. He logs big minutes, has a solid floor in terms of shots and blocked shots and he is nearly a 1 point per game defenseman! One of the benefits of facing the Red Wings is that they’re horrible in all aspects of the game, and they take a lot of penalties. While Dougie was a ghost in the 1st game of the season, he’s due for a big game tonight alongside Aho and CAR1
Matt Dumba | $4200 (FD) | $4600 (DK)
Dumba has never quite lived up to his potential. Nevertheless, he is reasonably priced on both sites. He logs around 21-23 mins per game and he isn’t scared of taking shots and blocking shots. He gets an alright matchup tonight as he is facing the Kings. Even if Dumba doesn’t get a goal or an assist, he should be able to get around 8 FD pts in shots/blocked shots. Playing alongside Fiala and Kaprizov on PP1 will help him get assists and perhaps even a goal! While this is not a low owned play, he should fly under the radar enough to make a difference in your lineup.
Honorable Mentions: Theodore, Pietrangelo, Rieilly, Chabot, Petry, Rasmus Anderson, Edler (FD only), and Fox
Petr Mrazek | $8100 (FD) | $8300 (DK)
The Hurricanes are an outstanding team both offensively and defensively. They should provide the number of goals needed for Mrazek and the Hurricanes to win as well as protecting any high danger chances that the Red Wings could get. In terms of getting the win tonight, it doesn’t get any safer for Mrazek! He faced Detroit on Thursday and was able to get a 14 saves shutout and quite frankly it could happen once again. Detroit is horrible on both sides of the ice. The only risk is that Mrazek may not face many shots. Cash play only for me.
Elvis Merzlikins | $7300 (FD) | $7200 (DK)
The rookie is making his 2021 debut looking to prove that last season wasn’t a fluke. He will face the Predators (slightly above-average offense). The Preds can definitely score, but also allow a fair amount of goals. On the other end, the Blue Jackets struggle offensively but they are a top defensive squad! The win is not safe by any means, but I do believe CBJ can come out with the W. If they do, it will certainly come on the back of an outstanding performance by Merzlikins ranging from 0-2 goals against and probably around 30 saves.
Honorable Mentions: Lehner, Varlamov, and Talbot
Don’t forget to check on Twitter for warmup line rushes to gain an edge on your competition! In cash, I’ll be looking towards Carolina, Toronto, Edmonton, and Vegas with a few one-offs of my fav GPP stacks/teams which include NYI, MIN, OTT, and MTL. Once again we have great value plays in Grigorenko, Dadonov (DK only), Norris, Batherson, Hoglander, and much more highlighted in this article! Best of luck to everyone! See y’all in the green!!!
