NHL is finally here and I couldn’t be happier! We will start the season with a 5 game slate starting at 5:30 pm on Wednesday. I will be sharing my favorite cash stack as well as my favorite GPP stack. Then, I’ll share my top 2 plays for each position (1 stud and 1 value) and we will end the article with a brief summary!

And finally, let’s talk some hockey!

TB1 Cash Stack: Palat – Point – Stamkos

Fanduel: $21,800 (40% of salary) / DraftKings: $20,400 (41% of salary)

Tampa gets a juicy matchup on opening day facing the Blackhawks that have gotten far worse than last year. The Hawks allowed an average of 3.06 goals against per game but that was with the outstanding goaltender named Robin Lehner. This year, they will be starting Malcolm Subban (Yikes!). On the other end, Tampa was the best offense in the shortened 2019-2020 season with an impressive league-leading 3.47 GF/game and the majority of it came from TB1. I love TB1 and if you want to profit on this 1st slate you’ll need them. While this stack is expensive, all 3 players are also on PP1 together which boosts their upside even more! With a total of 41 (Palat), 64 (Point) and 66 (Stamkos) points last season, you should expect goals from TB1 and a likely goal-fest in Tampa against Chicago’s swiss cheese defense!

Other viable stacks: TOR1: Thornton, Matthews, and Marner; EDM1: RNH, McDavid, and Kassian

MTL2 GPP Stack: Drouin – Suzuki – Anderson

Fanduel: $9300 (17% of salary)/ DraftKings: $10,700 (21% of salary)

The Canadiens can be tricky when it comes to DFS. They were an above-average offense with a 2.93 GF/game and the scoring is often spread out for them. While MTL lost Domi, they managed to get Josh Anderson and if he lives up to his potential, he can be a great player for Montreal! Now, matchup wise, I expect the Danault line to match against Matthews which leaves MTL2 facing the Tavares line (Average line defensively). Toronto is a mess defensively and we’ve witnessed it last season: 3.17 GA/game and their PK was way below average at 77.7%. Great matchup? Check. While we have no sample size for these 3 players together, I know they’re offensively minded and they play at a high pace and all three get PP time. Drouin and Suzuki are getting PP1 time while Anderson will be getting PP2 time. For $9,300 on FD and $10,700 on DK, they’re safe and a cheap stack to afford!

Other viable stacks: COL1: Burakovsky, MacKinnon, and Rantanen; PHI1: Lindblom, Couturier, and Konecny

Top 2 Players per Position (Stud and Value Play)

Connor McDavid | $8800 (FD) and $8400 (DK)

If you haven’t heard about McDavid than you’re probably living under a rock. He is simply the best player in the NHL with his 34 goals and 97 points in 64 games. He gets to face a Canucks team that has gotten worse defensively and in the crease as well. The Canucks were the 9th worst in goals against last season (3.10 GA/game) with an above-average PK and they take a lot of penalties. McDavid was part of 43% of Edmonton goals last season and he missed a few games as well! McDavid is matchup proof and playable on any given night but even more against a fast pace and below-average defensive team in the Canucks, expect a big night out of him!

Nick Suzuki | $5400 (FD) | $4200 (DK)

Suzuki had a solid rookie season with 41 points in 71 games and I expect him to have another very great season. With Max Domi gone, we can expect him to be the #2 centre for Montreal. As mentioned earlier with the MTL2 stack, Montreal are getting a great rivalry matchup against the Leafs and we should see a lot of goals in this one! While Suzuki is severely underpriced on DK compared to FD, I expect him to smash and to fly under the radar!

Honorable mentions: Dylan Strome (Mainly for DK), Auston Matthews, Nathan MacKinnon, and Brayden Point

Steven Stamkos | $8400 (FD) | $7400 (DK)

Tampa is starting the season against a terrible defense and a terrible goaltender and we love that! Stamkos should lead Tampa’s fire offense in their 1st game with his 29 goals and 66 points in 57 games last season! Reports are saying that he is fully recovered and healthy, and he should be anxious to tickle the twine after an injury riddled 2020. Him and his linemates should feast against a young and inexperienced defense for Chicago. If Tampa gets any powerplay chances, we should see Stamkos and his 10 powerplay goals last season leading the way!

Joe Thornton | $4200 (FD) | $3600 (DK)

I’m surprised Joe Thornton is still playing in the NHL. Feels like he’s been playing for a long time… Well, he is still playing and is a top value play on this 1st slate of the season! Thornton might be 41 years old but Toronto is giving him a chance to start the season on the 1st line with Matthews and Marner. On top of that, he also gets the chance to be on PP1 which is amazing and makes him a core cash value play for me.

Honorable mentions: Rust (FD), Boeser (DK), Konecny (DK), Killorn and Lindblom (FD)

Victor Hedman: $6800 (FD) | $6200 (DK)

If you haven’t realized by now, I’m in love with Tampa tomorrow. Hedman is a great play because he is capable of hitting the shot bonus or blocked shot bonus (DK only) but he also has upside and his 55 points in 66 games for a defenseman is quite impressive! He logs over 24 minutes per game and you can count on him to get goals and assists on the powerplay often with Tampa’s lethal PP1. I’m personally more of a value defenseman type of player but players like Hedman are worth rostering whenever they get a great matchup!

Alexander Edler | $4300 (FD) | $5800 (DK)

This is more of a cash play and a FanDuel play because of his cheap price. I personally wouldn’t play him at that price on DK (play Weber, Hedman, or Makar at that price instead). Edler is well known in the NHL DFS community for being too cheap because he often gets 8+ points per night with his shots and blocked shot floor. He used to be on PP1 at the start of last season and then PP2 for the remaining of the season. Now, he will be getting 0 PP mins but his floor makes him a great value play for cash games!

Honorable Mentions: Morgan Rielly, Shea Weber, Jeff Petry, Darnell Nurse and Duncan Keith

Andrei Vasilevskiy | $8600 (FD) | $8400 (DK)

Once again, I love Tampa on this 1st slate and I think they will win easily. Vasy has a good defense in front of him as well as being an outstanding goaltender himself. The Hawks have gotten worse offensively with Toews, Dach, and Nylander being injured to start the season. Safe win with Shutout upside!

Carter Hart | $7700 (FD) | $7800 (DK)

Carter Hart had a very great season last year and is surprisingly cheap as well. This is strictly a GPP play. While I do think the Flyers win this game, it’s never easy to face Crosby and the Penguins. This game has potential for low scoring but I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up being a goal-fest as well. Another reason why I like Hart is because of his Home/Road splits and the Flyers Home/Road splits. Hart had a record of 20-3-2 at Home with a 1.63 GAA and an outstanding .943 sv% while his numbers were 4-10-1 with a 3.81 GAA and a .857 sv% on the road. He gets to be at home for opening night and that makes me confident in his ability to steal a win against the Penguins.

Finally, don’t forget to check on Twitter for warmups line rushes to gain an edge over everyone! NHL is finally back and it’s showtime! There are a lot of value plays on DraftKings that I love which will help afford the big studs. Overall, I really like this 5 gamer from A to Z. Let’s have an amazing 2021 NHL season! See y’all in the Green!!
